$33.9 million UAB Gardendale facility set for opening next week
UAB’s new $33.9 million Gardendale facility off Mount Olive Road is set to open Tuesday.
A ribbon-cutting and preview is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, 960 Mount Olive Road, at the intersection of Mount Olive Road and Flippo Parkway. The facilities will begin seeing patients Jan. 15. The complex replaces UAB’s previous Gardendale facility on Fieldstown Road.
Will Ferniany, UAB Health System CEO, said the dramatic population growth of the northern portion of Jefferson County demonstrated the need for more access to health care. Construction began in 2017 on the twin buildings at the 6.2-acre site.
The facility will have the only emergency medical services on the Interstate 65 corridor between Cullman and downtown Birmingham, providing 26,700 square feet of space. It has an FAA-compliant heliport, MRI/CT/X-ray imaging, 12 exam rooms, a bariatric lift, laboratory services and a pharmacy. The emergency department will be capable of performing minor trauma care and will have isolation and decontamination facilities.
The adjoining 38,400-square-foot, two-story medical office building will offer primary care, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, cardiology, dermatology, urology, nephrology and gastrointestinal services. There is a diagnostic imaging suite, lab services, telemedicine and digital public interface kiosks, as well as a UAB Callahan Eye Hospital clinic and optical shop.
Sims Architectural Studio designed the emergency department, and Gresham Smith & Partners the medical office building. Brasfield & Gorrie is the general contractor.
